1. Hand Saw and Pruner – the one thing that can ruin a hunt in no time is a limb in the wrong spot. Whether it stops you from drawing your bow or it is in a critical shooting lane, it’s not supposed to be there. Pruners and a hunting hand saw can always be used in bow hunting situations. Clearing limbs directly around you for drawing your bow is crucial.
2. Bow Hook – when it is extremely cold out or you need your hands free to check the wind, rattle, or grunt in a buck that is going the wrong way, not having a spot to hang your bow can really put a damper on the day. Holding a bow or trying to find something to hang it on can lead to a truly catastrophic event (i.e., dropping your bow). A bow hook is easy to install and can make a big difference.
3. Hoist Rope – another critical piece of hunting gear from an accessory standpoint is a hoist rope. This item can break a hunt before it even starts, forcing you to go back to the truck or potentially hunt from the ground. Climbing up in a tree with a climber or saddle system would be nearly impossible and dangerous if you had to climb while holding your weapon. A hoist rope or two is always worth throwing in the pack.
4. Rubber Twist Ties – if you haven’t used them before, rubber twist ties can become an accessory that you want on every hunt. A few twist ties can be a lightweight solution that keeps your calls, quiver, rattling antlers, or even your pack close and readily accessible. This can keep those pieces of gear from ruining a hunt by noisily falling to the ground, or keep them out of your pack where they are unreachable if a pair of eyes and ears are close enough to cause caution.
5. Field Dressing Knife or Kit – when the hunt does come together, whether on a piece of private land or deep into the backcountry, having a field dressing kit or gutting knife to gut or potentially quarter the deer is arguably one of the most important pieces of hunting gear. Don’t be caught in the woods without one.
